After just escaping his mother, who had tried her hardest to wipe dirt off his face, Ron had booked it onto the train and groaned, seeing every compartment was full. He kept looking longingly into the windows, desperately wishing for one to at least be empty enough to seat him. Of course though, this would be his luck. His first day and he'd already be known as the loner who sat in the hallway on the train with his rat.
Pulling his trunk - which was a lot less heavy than other's people's looked - he finally found a compartment with only one person inside near the end of the train. It took him a good few moments before he gathered the courage to slide open the door, and speak up - albeit a bit quietly.
"Er, would you mid if I sit here? All the others are full.." He smiled a little at the boy sitting alone, recognizing him as the one his mother had helped cross through the platform.

Harry was nervous. Scratch that. He was terrified. And jumpy. He had just barely made it onto the platform with the help of an extremely nice family but this wasn't boding well for his first year at this magical school. He was going to be the worst there, he knew it. And what was so ominous about that was that Hagrid and all those other people in diagon alley that had bumped into them had been convinced that he was going to be some great, powerful wizard who could defeat this dark wizard or something like that. The details were still muddled for him. So, with his current state of mind, it was no wonder that he jumped when the glass compartment door suddenly opened. He calmed down a good deal though when he recognized the youngest boy from the family on the platform that had helped him.
Harry waved him in energetically. The other thing he was most worried about besides the growing list of being the worst in the school and being laughed at and thrown out with someone saying it was a mistake, was not making any friends. He gestured politely at the seat opposite him. "Not at all. Please, sit." He waited for a minute or two and then asked something that had been nagging at him since the family helped him board the train.

Ron smiled a little and sat down, putting his trunk by him and looking out the window for a moment to wave at Ginny and his mother. Noticing he'd never told the other boy his name, he spoke up, a bit slowly.
"Oh, and I'm Ron by the way. Ron Weasley." He smiled again, pulling out his rat and putting him in his lap with a small cracker. The thing was always eating. "And this is Scabbers, my rat. He doesn't do much though, and he's quite boring. So what's your name?" He stroked the now-sleeping rat, hoping he didn't come off as too pushy or nervous.

Harry smiled at the boy and then looked curiously at the snoozing rat before bringing his eyes back to the other boy's face. "Nice to meet you Ron. I'm Harry Potter." He held out one hand politely to shake Ron's in greeting. He was just so relieved to be well on his way to making a new friend that he had forgotten his name might get something of a double take from anyone who had grown up in the wizarding world. After all, the only reaction his name had ever gotten before was laughter because of his baggy clothes that used to be Dudleys or his constantly broken glasses or the weird things that kept happening around him.
occ: sry, shortness. didnt know what else to have him say quite yet

ooc: don't apologize! Not all posts have to be long! xD
Ron's eyes widened, but he shook Harry's hand politely. "Are...are you really?" He swallowed and immediately felt like he didn't belong in this compartment. He was too poor, too much of a nobody. Curiosity getting the best of him though, he went on to ask - "Is it...do you really have the.." He swallowed, "The scar...?" He paid no attention whatsoever to the broken glasses, used to having his own things broken as he got them second hand. In fact, even his robes didn't quite fit him, and they were far dirtier than Harry's.

Harry was confused as Ron began stammering about something Harry might have but when the other boy finally mentioned the word scar, Harry understood at once. With a cheerful smile, he reached up to push his bangs aside, revealing the lightening shaped cut above his right eye. "Oh, that. Sure."
He hesitated, then blurted out something that had been nagging him ever since meeting Ron and his family on the platform. "Are all your family witches and wizards?" He found Ron just as fascinating as Ron apparently found him.

Ron had almost regretted asking. He'd thought Fred and George had been making up that the boy they'd seen was Harry Potter. But just as he was about to apologize, Harry had lifted his bangs, revealing that famous scar. A scar he'd heard all sorts of stories about growing up. A look of complete awe on his face, all Ron could manage to really say was, "Wicked."
At his question, he smiled a little. "Yeah I think so...I think maybe my dad's got a second cousin or something that's an accountant, but we never really talk about him." He paused, trying hard not to continue staring at him. "So...you live with Muggles right? What're they like?"

Harry let his bangs fall, feeling distinctly awkward now as Ron continued to stare at him with apparent awe and fascination. He was glad for the distraction from his name and scar that came in the form of Ron asking another question. "Awful" Harry replied at once but then decided to elaborate. "At least the ones I lived with. I'm sure there are decent muggles about."
He paused and then added wistfully, back on the subject of Ron's wizarding family again (for he seemed almost as determined to talk about Ron as Ron was to talk about him), "Wish I had three wizard brothers."

Ron frowned as he described the Muggles briefly. He'd always had somewhat of a weird feeling around them - like he feared constantly that they'd tie him up like in witch trials. He gave Harry a half-smile when he mentioned his brothers, letting out a small - almost exasperated - sigh.
"Five," he said quietly, shaking his head almost sadly. "I've got a lot to live up to. The ones you didn't see, Bill and Charlie, have already left. Bill was Head boy and Charlie was Quidditch captain. And Percy's a Prefect now. Fred and George are really funny, and most everyone likes them. And with five brothers...well, I get all their old stuff. And if I do anything right, it doesn't matter as much, because they did it first." His ears and face were pink, embarrassment making him look down at the floor.

Harry felt bad almost immediately as it was quite clear that Ron was embarrassed. Wishing he could take back what he had said, still not entirely sure what it was that had been said that made the other boy go pink, he cast his mind around for something reassuring to say. "I'm sure you'll do really well at school though" he piped up encouragingly. "I mean, you already know loads of magic stuff, I bet."
He hesitated with an anxious expression before voicing his biggest concern which kept circling back to the front of his mind. "I bet I'm the worst in the year. I didn't even know I was a wizard until Hagrid told me and I didn't know anything about Voldemort or-"

He was shaking his head before Harry's full sentence had left his mouth. He was never really that great at school-like things. Reading wasn't something he was too fond of; he'd rather be watching or playing a good game of Quidditch. "I'll probably fail out," he said this miserably, looking down at Scabbers with a solemn expression. "And I don't know too much. I mean, Fred and George tried teaching me a spell the other day, to turn Scabbers yellow."
He offered an encouraging smile to Harry. "I wouldn't worry. There are tons of Muggle-borns here, whose families didn't even know they were wizards until getting their letters. You're not alone here, mate." However, his smile faded when Harry casually said He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named's name. "Harry! What're you saying that for? You can't say his name!" He'd winced, cringing back a bit into the seat.

"Sorry" Harry exclaimed immediately, feeling foolish for some reason. "I'm not trying to be brave or anything, I just never knew you shouldn't...you see?! I know absolutely nothing, I'm going to look like a right fool." His voice was laden with misery as he stared out the window.
A few minutes of awkward silence later, the door slid open and a plump, smiling woman who was pushing a cart appeared, wondering if they would like anything to eat. Harry jumped to his feet at once. He had never had any pocket money and had always been reduced to staring enviously as Dudley bought mounds of sweets. Finally Harry was going to be able to do the same thing.

The small first year settled back down into his seat, taking a few calming deep breaths.
"It's just...no one says his name. It's sort of taboo, ya' know? People are still afraid, even with him having been gone this long..." Ron broke off with a sigh, feeling bad for making the boy miserable. "Cheer up though, it's alright. I'm sure you'll be great at Hogwarts. The best even." He grinned, but his cheery look faded as the woman walked in.
Sadly checking the pockets he already knew were empty for money, the red head finally pulled out two lumpy and grotesque looking sandwiches that had obviously been smashed. "Uh...no thanks, I'm...I'm all set." His ears had gone pink again, and he looked down at the corned beef. His mother knew he hated the stuff...but there were so many of them she always forgot.
He unwrapped the foil with a sour expression on his face, re-wrapping it almost immediately after. His stomach was growling, and he felt as if he were starving, but not enough to stomach the contents of his mother's corned beef sandwiches. "Not hungry," he told her, forcing a smile onto his face before turning to look out the window.

Harry knew that the other boy was just trying to make him feel better when he said that he would be the best at Hogwarts and he appreciated it even if he knew it wouldn't be true at all. So when it came time to make his choices from the trolley and he noticed that Ron had taken to staring out the window instead of at all the food options, Harry pulled a handful of gold from his pocket and tipped it into the woman's hand. "Two of everything please" he told her and it took him three trips to dump all the food onto the empty seat next to his, across from Ron.
"Take anything you want" he said with a friendly smile as the trolley was wheeled off to the next compartment. Harry himself took a box marked 'chocolate frog' and looked at it warily. "These aren't real frogs are they" he asked nervously, once again showing his complete lack of wizarding knowledge.

Ron tried not to notice when Harry pulled out a pile of gold, but couldn't help staring a little, eyes wide. He'd never really seen that much money, let alone seen it spent on something so trivial as candy. About to go back to looking out the window, he was instead astonished to find Harry buying so much, and then offering him some of it. He was, of course, a little hesitant to accept at first, but the friendly smile is what did it. He dug in immediately, his appetite soaring as a huge, child-like grin spread across his face.
"Thanks!" He pulled out some red licorice and bit into it, his face lit up with pleasure. He hadn't been able to buy candy in a while, and it was a nice treat. At Harry's question, Ron couldn't help laughing in spite of himself. "Oh no, it's just a charm. It's really the card you want though. Let me know what you have - I'm collecting, and I'm missing a few." He opened up a box of something peppermint, digging in happily to those as well, watching Harry with his frog, an interested look plastered on his face.
