Ainsley stared at Harry, then at the painting, as if expecting some sort of punchline. “Really? Well, then, how do they know that you're not just able to talk to animals that are made with magic?” he asked. Then he realized how stupid that sounded and gave a half-hearted shrug. “By the way, I'm not muggleborn, but I was raised as a muggle if that'll get me out of the year-end exams.” Because he hadn't read up on Salazar Slytherin, he couldn't imagine why this was such a big deal. He looked at the painting. “Hey! Even you're scared of him? Shouldn't you be scared of anyone with a wand? I mean, I could light you on fire right now, you know.” In a strange way he felt left out in not understanding what was going on. So, as usual, he joked. And apparently threatened paintings? Let's hope that's not a magical serial killer warning.

Harry raised an eyebrow, confused at Ainsley's comment. Apparently the painting were confused too because their occupants all just tilted their heads and stared silently at the boy. After a moment, the silence was broken by Ainsley again. Something about being raised as a muggle and then threatening the paintings with fire. Throughout all this, Harry just stared at him. He was supposed to be the weird one and here was this other boy threatening to set paintings on fire because they had big mouths and no sense of the truth.
The paintings all began running to hide and insulting Ainsley, though not very loudly. Probably because they were afraid that either Harry or Ainsley would attack them if they did; Ainsley with fire and Harry with a snake.
Harry gave a strained smile. "Well, I guess I should be going..."

Ainsley looked at Harry as though he'd just sprouted a horse's behind. “What? Why? Oh c'mon, I didn't mean it. It got them to shut up for a minute, didn't it? Besides, I want to know what it has to do with muggleborns.” He had his suspicions when he really thought about it, because of what he'd learned since the last time that he ran into Harry. Somehow, though, the fact that Slytherin was a parseltongue just never came up in what he'd heard about the chamber. “It can't be about the chamber anyway,” he said more to himself. “I mean, Mrs. Norris isn't a muggleborn.”

Harry considered this for a moment and then instead of leaving entirely just took a few steps away from that particular painting to gather some privacy for the rest of their conversation. And then as much as he didn't want to, he went over the whole story again. From the very beginning when two of his least favorite people were introduced as the co-teachers of the club all the way through to the end where Draco conjured the snake in an attempt to scare Harry but it had turned on the first person it saw instead which was Justin who had, at the beginning of the lesson, confessed to being a muggleborn. "So then I told it to stop what it was doing" Harry concluded in a morose tone. "But apparently I told it in another language...without knowing...and it sounded like I was encouraging it. And that's what happened."

Ainsley was an active listener to Harry's story, making faces and 't'ch' noises in all right places. He was glad that he didn't go! Professor Snape had been one of the people running the club along with Lockhart? The idea of the two in the same room with him at once was enough to make Ainsley feel slightly ill. He knew of Justin, a little bit. He was a bit annoying and a supporter of Lockhart but obviously Ainsley was relieved that he didn't actually die. “Well... Most of the time when people are speaking another language the tone counts a lot. You can tell if someone who is speaking German is angry or happy... Encouraging someone to kill a person and trying to stop them from killling someone would be hard to mix up. Too bad of all the languages it had to be snake language, right?” He was slightly apprehensive in being by Harry. But if people were always the way rumors said, then Filch would be hanging students on hooks in his office for getting into trouble, and as of yet no one had been reported missing. It was scary, though... Malfoy conjuring a snake that wanted to kill someone. Wasn't it possible that he had encouraged it to attack Justin? If Slytherin's monster was a snake then maybe Malfoy was the one who petrified Mrs. Norris! He couldn't be blamed for wanting to do that part though.
